The 12th Annual Sedona Lunar New Year Festival was a resounding success, bringing together approximately 200 attendees for an afternoon filled with vibrant performances, cultural experiences, and heartfelt community engagement. Hosted by the Korean American Association of Northern Arizona (KAANA), this year’s festival celebrated the Year of the Wooden Snake, a symbol of wisdom, growth, and transformation.
A Festive Start with Martial Arts and Mindfulness
The festival kicked off with an exhilarating Taekwondo demonstration by KC’s Family Tae Kwon Do team from Cottonwood. Their impressive display of skill and discipline set the tone for the day’s dynamic performances. Following this, attendees were treated to a serene and enlightening Qigong demonstration led by MJ Kim, COO of the Sedona Mago Center for Retreat and Wellbeing. This ancient practice offered a moment of reflection and mindfulness, harmonizing mind, body, and spirit.
Honoring Traditions and Welcoming Guests
The festival was honored by the presence of distinguished guests, including Sohyung EJ Lim, President of KAANA; Ann Shaw, Mayor of Cottonwood; and Clifford Loader, Treasurer of the Sedona Chamber of Commerce. Their inspiring words underscored the importance of cultural appreciation and community unity, reinforcing the festival’s mission to promote diversity and harmony.
A Journey Through Dance and Music
One of the highlights of the event was the breathtaking performance by the Korean Traditional Dance Team. From the regal elegance of the Choon-Ang-Jeon court dance to the visually stunning Fan Dance, each performance transported the audience through Korea’s rich history and traditions. The audience was further captivated by the mesmerizing sounds of the Gayageum during “The Voice of Spring” and the powerful energy of the Sword Dance and Janggu Drum Dance.
The communal spirit of the festival reached new heights during the Arirang singalong, where attendees joined voices in singing Korea’s beloved folk song. The lyrics, deeply rooted in themes of self-discovery and joy, resonated with all who participated, creating a beautiful moment of unity.
Closing with a Spectacular Lion Dance and a Touching Film
The festivities concluded with the electrifying Lion Dance by Wuji Wellness, a performance that symbolized good luck and prosperity. The lion’s vibrant colors, synchronized movements, and rhythmic drumming filled the space with excitement and joy, leaving the audience in awe.
As a special finale, attendees were invited to a screening of the Oscar-winning film Minari. This heartfelt story of a Korean-American family’s pursuit of the American dream provided a perfect reflection on themes of resilience, hope, and cultural identity.
