A Recap of KAANA’s Board Games and Drinks Event in Sedona

Hello, Sedona folks! On December 6, 2023, the Korean American Association of Northern Arizona (KAANA) hosted a gathering at the Korean Cultural Center with eight participants. The event featured Korean board games and traditional drinks, aiming for a mix of tradition and fun.

Games and Fun: Yut-nori and Dakji in the Spotlight

The highlight of the evening was Yut-nori and Dakji, two traditional Korean board games. Yut-nori, played with four wooden sticks similar to dice, brought everyone together for some friendly competition. Guided by Daniel Jeong, participants of all ages enjoyed the game’s simplicity. Dakji, a traditional folded paper tile challenge, added an extra layer of excitement to the event.

Tasting Tradition: Makgeolli, Shikhye, Sujeonggwa, and Korean Snacks

The event also featured tasting sessions with Makgeolli, a milky rice wine, Shikhye, a sweet rice beverage, and Sujeonggwa, a sweet cinnamon punch. Alongside these traditional drinks were Korean pop snacks, offering a taste of Korean culinary delights.

Community Support and Cultural Preservation

Beyond the games and drinks, the event served a greater purpose. A suggested donation of $15 per attendee contributed to sustaining the Korean Cultural Center of KAANA’s mission in preserving Korean heritage within the community.

A Night at 340 Jordan Rd.

The intimate gathering at 340 Jordan Rd. embodied the spirit of cultural appreciation and community. Participants enjoyed the warmth of the Sedona community, making the event more than just a casual gathering—it was a celebration of tradition, friendship, and shared experiences.

Laughter filled the space, traditional games enlivened the atmosphere, and the aroma of authentic Korean beverages filled the air.
